Auto-reframe a video, following the face

How to do it

  1. Open Reframe for social and drop your file in, or pick it from your device. It stays on your device.
  2. Check the settings. 9:16 and “Crop, following the face” are preselected. 1:1 and 4:5 work too; pick 1080p for the sharpest result from a 1080p source.
  3. Press Run, then preview and download the result.

A calm camera, not a jittery one

Faces are found a couple of times a second by a face detector that runs on your device. Your video is played through quickly in the background to do it: a 10-minute video takes about a minute on a laptop.

The crop doesn't chase every movement. While the face stays near the middle of the window, the camera holds still. When they move off, it pans smoothly to catch up; when the picture switches to someone on the other side, it cuts, like an edit. Brief misdetections are ignored, and when two people sit close enough together, both are kept in.

The picture is cropped from the source at full resolution, so a 1080p landscape video gives a sharp 1080×1920 vertical one.

Questions

Is my video uploaded for face detection?
No. The detector runs in your browser. Only the positions of the faces (boxes, not pictures) go to our server, which plans the camera moves. Faces are never identified.
What if there are two people?
If they fit in the frame together, both are kept. Otherwise the crop follows the more prominent face and switches with a cut when the shot changes.
What if no face is found?
The crop stays centred, like a normal crop. For wide shots with several people, the blurred-background option keeps everyone in.
Which browsers work?
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The video has to be in a format the browser can play (MP4 from a phone or an editor is fine).
